Fact Sheet

 Disorder:Epilepsy

Variety of Poodle Affected: Toy, Miniature, & Standard

Description: Seizures lasting from 30-90 seconds to several minutes

Symptoms: Shivering, shaking, loss of bowel or bladder control, loss of ability to stand, unusual behaviors such as biting at the air, staring off into space as if in a trance

Mode of Inheritance: Unknown, although in the Poodle, a strong hereditary tendency exists for "true" (idiopathic) epilepsy

Method of Diagnosis:EEG test can be used to rule out acquired epilepsy resulting from a physical cause such as traumatic injury to the skull.

Age of Onset: Usually 6 months to 5 years for idiopathic epilepsy

Treatment: Anticonvulsant drugs such as phenobarbitol for dogs that have more than one seizure per month. Treatment is a lifelong commitment. Epileptic seizures are seldom fatal once treatment has begun. However, in some cases, epileptic dogs will have clusters (groups) of seizures which are more difficult to treat.

Recommendations: Dogs with epilepsy should not be bred. Dogs that produce offspring with epileptic seizures should be considered carriers. Great care should be taken to avoid breeding carrier to carrier.
