FACT SHEET

Disorder: Patellar Luxation (slipped stifles)

Variety of Poodle Affected: Toy, Miniature and Standard

Description: Dislocation of the kneecap from abnormal structure of the stifle joint, as well as muscles and tendons

Symptoms: Pain as the dog flexes the affected leg, moving with the affected leg held off the ground intermittently

Mode of Inheritance: Unknown, although familial tendency is suspected. Patellar luxation may also be caused by a traumatic accident or abnormal structure

Method of Diagnosis: Radiograph (x-ray) or palpation of the suspicious joint structure

Age of Diagnosis: Varies

Where to Submit X-rays: Veterinary Orthopedic Specialist

Treatment: The kneecap should be returned to a normal position. Surgery may be necessary in severe or chronic cases.

Recommendations: Every dog being used in a breeding program should be x-rayed or examined for luxation prior to being bred. Only dogs that are normal should be considered for breeding. Dogs that produce offspring with slipped stifels should be considered carriers and great care taken to avoid breeding carrier to carrier.
